Buff
BUFF is a collaboration with Ivette Spradlin
For their second collaboration Ivette Spradlin and Lenore Thomas have come together to create unique, mixed media, photographic prints based on buffs (painted out graffiti on buildings). Intended to cover an unwanted mark on a building, the buff instead references color field painting. These unintentional compositions on the sides of the buildings fill the frame of Spradlin’s photographs and generate an initial canvas for Thomas to respond. The process of creating this work is one of reconsidering the buff and recontextualizing what many consider undesirable. Thomas reintroduces marks and patterns back into the photographs using screenprint, collage, drawing and sewing. Acknowledging the original images made by both the graffiti and the buffs, Spradlin and Thomas are calling attention to the incidental aesthetics of these spaces.
